How to Make Bold Artwork Not Clash

If you find yourself not sure how to make a bolder art print work in your space, here are a few tips:

Frame

A great start is to matching the frame to the space. If your space is modern, stick to a thin black wood frame. If your space is Scandinavian or transitional, go for a more neutral natural wood frame for your art print.

Decor

Style the artwork in a space that makes sense. For example, if it's a colourful abstract, it makes more sense to style it in a modern or minimalist interior. If it's a funky botanical, maybe place it in a more maximalist space. Even if the colours or subject matter of the art print are wild, it will make more space in the context of a similar decor style.

Accessories

Try to style this artwork around accessories in the space that match the colour/subject matter of the art print. For example match some throw pillows, blankets, lamps or chairs to the framed print to create a more harmonious vignette.

Spring Art Trends

We're turning the corner on spring, while you're doing some spring cleaning, why not take a moment to refresh the art in your space?

Abstract Still Life Artworks

Instead of the traditional spring florals, add a vibrant still life to your home. Vases with florals and botanicals are having a moment in the interior design world right now. Choose a white wood frame and style these framed prints on a modern console table.

3 Neutral Art Trends

Plaster Imitation

Plaster texture art is taking the home decor world by storm. Instead of adding a chunky piece of plaster, why not instead add a beautiful minimalist print? These pieces add a lovely textural touch to any contemporary interior. These art prints are perfect framed in natural wood or white frames.

Abstract Figure

A classic addition to a home, figurative art is always on trend. Neutral line or shape based abstracts look beautiful larger over furniture or smaller as an addition to a modern gallery wall.

Chunky Lines

Line art doesn't have to fade into the background, it can also be a focal point. Thicker line art is making a comeback in pieces such as the bellow artwork. Create the ideal tableau with a framed art print, chair and matching accessories.

Art Trends Winter 2023

Styles

The styles of trending artworks have remained consistent since the fall, with modern classics, botanicals and
textural abstracts leading the way in the design world.

Colours

In the colder seasons, the trending colours tend to be darker and more neutral. This year, rust, sage, black and navy seem to be the most popular in art. These pieces are best styled in modern spaces with pops of those same colours in other elements in your space such as throw blanks, pillows, trinkets, books or other small decor pieces.

6 Places to Style Art Sets or Pairs

Console Table

Entryways are the first thing your guests see, why not wow them? Hang a framed set of prints over a console table in a front entryway and instantly impress any family member or friend.

Over A Bed

One of the most common design mistakes is going too small with art. Hang a large set of prints over a bed to make a big impact and visually balance the space.

Hallway

Either hang a large set up, or add a smaller framed art pair to a gallery wall in hallways. This is a great way to add some life to an otherwise boring space in your home.

Living Room

Hang an art shelf over a couch and style a set of framed art prints with small decor pieces such as candle sticks and small plants to create a  beautiful focal point.

Awkward Small Wall

We all have that one weird wall in our homes that's too small to style furniture in front of, but too large to be empty, why not hang a set of prints? Hang two smaller framed art prints vertically to draw the eyes up.

Bench

For an unexpected decor moment, style a set of art prints on a modern bench. Place some books and a small bowl beside them to create a beautiful tableau.

Wall Prints I How High Should I hang My Art?

When hanging framed art prints, you might wonder how high up you should be hanging them? Consider these two things before making any holes in your walls:

Furniture

An easy guideline for hanging art is sticking to around eye level, or about 57-63 inches off the ground. This may vary if your furniture is much taller or shorter and the distance seems odd. If that's the case, hang the framed art print around 4-8 inches above it. One of the most common beginner interior design mistakes is hanging art too far up away from the furniture.

Eye Line

Think about the space in terms of usage. For example, in a living room, you will be sitting more than standing, which can change your eye line. It might be a good idea to hang a piece lower around some furniture so that you're not craning your neck to look at it. Hanging art lower can also provide interesting vignettes in a space.

Wall Prints I 3 Ways to Modernize Traditional Art

Frame

Instantly transform any dated or vintage style artwork with a thin modern wood frame. Black or white for a minimalist or contemporary space, or a thin neutral wood frame for a more Scandinavian or bohemian inspired interior. Ditch the mat and your piece is ready to hang, completely transformed.

Location

Interior designers have started placing art in other creative locations around the house. Instead of simply hanging a single large piece over a bed, hang your art in a modern gallery wall, or place on a sleek console table.

Decor

Context is key, placing a more traditional piece in a modern space will make the piece stand out. These pieces really pop on modern white or cream walls. Add some small decor pieces around the space in similar colours such as candles, bowls, vases or throw pillows and blankets, pulling the space together.

Wall Prints I 5 Unexpected Places To Style Art

Nightstand

Bedrooms are meant to be calm happy places. Adding some art to your bedroom is always a great choice to add a personal touch. Style a small framed art print with a little trinket dish on your nightstand to create some visual interest.

Bookshelf

You can either place several prints on top of the shelf in different sizes, or style a small print on one of the shelves. This adds a fun eclectic pop of colour to a more muted shelf.

Chair

We all have those random chairs lying around. Sit a framed artwork on it and place it in an unused corner. This is great option if your home has some dead space in awkward corners too low for larger furniture.

Radiator

Older building often have broken and unused radiators. Put a medium sized framed print on top of it, and place larger and smaller framed artworks on the ground to create an unexpected gallery.
Coffee Table
Not sure how to style your coffee table? Try adding a small art print and other decor items in a similar colour palette. For example, bowls, candle sticks and books in a warmer tone.

Wall Prints I 3 Styling Ideas For Oversized Art

Over Furniture

If you have a large empty spot above a bed or couch, hanging a framed oversized print is a perfect choice. A good rule of thumb is to keep the framed art prints around 2/3 the size of the furniture you're hanging it above.

Art Shelf

For a modern spin on a gallery wall, hang an art shelf. These wide shelves are a lovely way to display contemporary art prints. Layer several on a shelf in varying sizes to create some visual interest. Just remember to properly anchor the shelf into the wall as large framed artwork can be quite heavy.

Console Table

Another idea for styling larger artwork is to place them on a console table beside some smaller decor pieces such as candles, books and vases. When styling these pieces try to place objects of differing heights next to the art.

Large Abstract

If you looking to create a modern or minimalist style bedroom, a single large framed abstract is a perfect choice. Frame with a simple thin black or white wood frame to compliment the contemporary style.

Gallery Wall

When creating a gallery wall, make sure to hang an odd number of prints as they tend to look the best. Try to stagger the print sizes, with a few smaller prints, a couple medium and maybe one large piece.

Print Set

For a simple classic art look, hang a set of two medium sized framed prints over your bed. For a modern style, hang several photography, line art or shape based abstracts.

Landscape

A great modern spin on traditional bedroom art is an abstract landscape. These neutral artworks are a calm addition to any bedroom.

Art Shelf

If you have a set of framed prints that are odd sizes, use an art shelf to display these prints. Add some smaller decor items such as candles or a small potted plant to the shelf to create a fun modern wall art focal point.
