Wall Prints I 3 Tips For Decorating With Contrasting Art Colours

Colour Theory

Adding a contrasting pop of colour is a fun way to brighten up any space. When putting an art print in a contrasting colour in a room, try to remember colour theory. Blues and purples look great with yellows or oranges, they're at opposite sides of a colour wheel, making them "complimentary colours".

Decor Elements

Another way to incorporate dramatically different colours into a space is through small decor elements. Try placing some decor pieces such as books, vases and candles in the same colours as the art into the room, making it seem like the art print's colour contrast was intentional rather than clashing.

Frame

If your art is boldly contrasting the space, it's a good idea to add a simple modern frame. This puts the focus on the art, rather than the frame. Thin black wood frames are a classic choice, suiting any modern space.

This colour is everywhere at the moment. If you want a pop of colour, but want to keep a more muted colour palette in your space, sage is a great choice. These artworks look amazing on light cream walls with thin natural wood frames.

Black and Cream

Contemporary abstracts in black and cream have really been trending. Dramatic ink brush strokes on cream or pale neutral backgrounds stand out in gallery walls and framed art pairs or sets.

Pastels

Bright colourful prints are making a comeback, especially in the danish pastel aesthetic. These art prints come in a variety of styles from modern still lives to framed Matisse prints.

Blue

Always a classic, blue is a great option for bedrooms or bathrooms. Blue artworks are great to bring out other small decor elements in a space such as pillows, vases or throw blankets.

Wall Prints | 3 Autumnal Art Ideas

You don’t have to use cheesy pumpkin and harvest themed art in your home to bring some fall elements and colour into your space. Instead use warm and muted coloured art and frames.

Warm Abstract

For a modern spin on autumnal art, use abstracts with deep browns, oranges and yellows. These cozy colours will bring fall tones into the room. Use a simple brown or maple frame to complement these pieces. These prints look great hanging above or sitting on a console.

Neutral Landscape

Instead of bright oranges, neutral browns, creams and beiges can be a good choice for this time of year. Landscapes are a great investment since they can be left up through the year but will match your warm toned autumn decor perfectly. These suit living rooms and bedrooms and are great for large empty spaces above couches.

Vintage Print

Vintage art prints give off that classic fall look. They tend to use muted warm colours that make amazing fall decor. These can range from red and orange William Morris prints all the way to muted Matisse prints. Mix and match these prints to create an autumnal gallery wall.

Wall Prints | 4 Tips For Choosing Art

Colour

When choosing a colour palette, try to either have the art match the colour palette of the space, or use a totally opposite colour scheme to make it pop. When choosing colour, consider if you would like your art print to draw the eye or blend in harmoniously. Trending colour palettes are neutrals, greys and pastels, but feel free to experiment and have fun with colour!

Size

People tend to choose art that is too small for a wall. If you’re just hanging one or two pieces say over a couch, make sure they’re large enough to fill the space, 24”x36” and up. For a gallery wall or a smaller space, I recommend using 8”x10” to around 20”x28”, with maybe one larger piece at 24"x36". Remember when you’re hanging a large piece of framed artwork on a plaster wall to either hang from a wall stud or use wall plugs so the weight can be supported properly.

Frame

Similar to colour, consider if you would like the frame to blend into the artwork, or be a bold accent. I usually choose simple wood frames for my pieces, but vintage frames with scrollwork are making a big comeback with the rise of interior design styles like dark academia. For a clean minimalist look, go for a simple black wood frame, and for a more boho or Scandinavian look, use a maple or grey frame.

Style

Artwork is very subjective, everyone likes different styles. I can however recommend if your room is modern to use styles like abstracts or line art to compliment your room. If your space is traditional, you may prefer landscapes or photography. Take some time to browse Pinterest with relevant keywords to find art styles you may enjoy, such as searching “modern bedroom” or “Scandinavian living room”.

Wall Prints | 3 Types of Eye Catching Black and White Art

Abstracts
If you want a modern and sleek piece of artwork, go for a black and white abstract art print. You can choose between abstract shapes and textures to create visual interest. For these, I would stick to a simple black large framed art print, keep the focus on the dramatic print. To make the artwork really stand out, hang it on a white or black wall.
Photography
For a more classic and traditional look, go for black and white photography. You can find black and white photography in modern or vintage styles. If your space is modern, stick to a simple landscape or object, if you’re space is more eclectic, go for a fun vintage poster. These pieces can be smaller or mid size.
Portrait
If you’re looking for a conversation starter, hang a large black and white portrait. In terms of art style, I would recommend a simple line art piece if you’re a minimalist, and a watercolour, ink or photograph if your style is more eclectic or maximalist. These bold art prints can really add some drama to your walls. For sizing, I would go for a medium to large framed art print so that the face or figure isn't too small.

You can find all kinds of artwork using this style ranging from florals and coastal paintings, all the way to bright and colourful modern art.

When using a bright colour, make sure to either keep this the only pop of colour ( a focal point in your space), or have several other yellow accessories to tie the piece of art into your room. For a dramatic colour, palette, use white, black and yellow for a modern and stunning effect.

Matisse Art Prints

Welcome back reader, I hope you had a pleasant week. Today I want to talk to you about the rise of minimalism and how Matisse art prints are making a huge splash in social media.

Minimalist trends have been steadily rising for years, bringing back more simple and graphic art styles. It would be strange to have a white room with simple furniture and an elaborate old fashioned painting, so decorators have chosen to stick with more shape-based artwork to compliment this design aesthetic. I’m sure you’ve seen a ton of influencers online with their fancy apartments and their Matisse art prints. Matisse is a great choice for simple decoration styles as his work is very colour and shape-based. This simply means he mostly painted colourful blobs. His other most popular prints are line art, again a simple drawing or painting that will match a more modern design taste.

It’s not only that his art is simple, Matisse is a name that a lot of people recognize. Most people don’t have a terribly diverse art history knowledge, but I would recon almost everybody has at least heard the name Matisse. Buying name brand clothing and accessories has been trendy and a status symbol for a long-time, and this is no exception with artwork. Buying artwork with a big name like Matisse on it can look upscale and fashionable.

Whether you purchase a Matisse print for the name, style or simple the trend, Matisse art prints are great pieces for any modern space. With a timeless modern style, it’s no wonder 67 years after his death, Henri Matisse’s work lives on in contemporary homes.

Winter Blues

Well, it’s that time of year again, the days are short and the holiday season is over. Many people tend to feel a little down this time of year. Have you been keeping up with your New Years resolutions (come on Susan you’ve only been to the gym twice, you can’t quit now).
This is the perfect time of the year to spruce up your space. As many people are working from home right now, why not tackle your home office? It’s time to take control of that seasonal depression and start fresh.
This time of the year, I recommend a couple of different colours to brighten up your space. I recommend decorating with yellow, creams or your favourite colour. Why not give your space a touch of sunshine? I don’t know where you live reader, but here it’s been quite grey recently. Whether you want to go full bright tropical art, or simply a soft yellow, try to add some colour. After all the whites, greens and reds from the holiday decorations, it’s about time you chose something different.
Next, try to rearrange your space. I know this might sound really simple, but even small changes like shifting your lamp to the other side of the desk can really make an interior feel fresh. Take some time to make your work space a little more productive and new. Home offices don’t have to be boring, you can a little more playful with them. Now, stop reading this post and please clean up that pile of paper that’s been sitting on your desk for the past month.
