3 Tips For Grouping Art Prints

When creating a gallery wall or an art shelf, you may be feeling overwhelmed with all of the choices on how to style art prints together. Here are a couple quick tips to make that easier.

Colour

If you're completely lost, colour is a great jumping off point. Create a simple minimalist gallery wall with all neutral prints, or a colourful eclectic wall with pastels. For a sleek modern look, choose black and white abstracts and frame with a thin black wood frame.

Frame

For a simple modern style, match the frame colour and go for a simple black frame. If you want more of a maximalist style, feel free to mix and match the frames, but maybe have a set or two that match.

Location

Depending on where you're styling these framed art prints, the sizing and number of art prints will change. In general, odd numbers of groupings look the best. For example, an art shelf with three to five prints and a gallery wall with 5, 7 or 9. If you're working with a larger space, vary the sizes and mix in some oversized statement pieces.

Wall Prints I How High Should I hang My Art?

When hanging framed art prints, you might wonder how high up you should be hanging them? Consider these two things before making any holes in your walls:

Furniture

An easy guideline for hanging art is sticking to around eye level, or about 57-63 inches off the ground. This may vary if your furniture is much taller or shorter and the distance seems odd. If that's the case, hang the framed art print around 4-8 inches above it. One of the most common beginner interior design mistakes is hanging art too far up away from the furniture.

Eye Line

Think about the space in terms of usage. For example, in a living room, you will be sitting more than standing, which can change your eye line. It might be a good idea to hang a piece lower around some furniture so that you're not craning your neck to look at it. Hanging art lower can also provide interesting vignettes in a space.

Poster Gallery Wall

Instead of making holes in the wall, either use command strips to hang lighter framed art prints, or stick unframed art prints to your wall. Gallery walls look amazing over a bed, couch or across a hallway wall.

Art Shelf

If you only want to make a couple of holes, consider hanging an art shelf. These sturdy shelves are made to hold several pieces of art and a couple of smaller home decor items such as candle sticks, books or small bowls. Stagger the sizes, and add perhaps layer three or five pieces of art on the shelf (try to work in odd numbers as they look best).

Floor Gallery

If your landlord is a little more strict, creating a floor gallery is a fun design opportunity. Place different sized art prints on the floor, or a small bench/box to create some height variation. These galleries look amazing in subtle neutrals for a more Scandinavian look, or with bold colours to create a focal point in your space.

Wall Prints I 4 Art Ideas For Modern Living Rooms

Ink Brush Still Life

There has been a real uprising in ink brush style art, making it a great choice for a modern living room. These pieces look perfect with a thin black wood frame hung over a console table or in a modern gallery wall.

Art Shelf

This is a great solution for if you have a few prints in different sizes, but don't want to hang a traditional gallery wall. Style this shelf with several framed prints in different sizes along with some smaller decor elements such as candle sticks, books or a small vase.

Oversized Landscape

Modern abstract landscapes are an elegant spin on traditional art found in living rooms. Hang a large or oversized landscape above your couch, filling up that big empty space. Add some throw pillows onto the couch with colours from the framed landscape to bring the space together.

Neutral Abstract

For a more minimal addition to your space, add a neutral abstract. Frame this piece with a neutral, black or white wood frame for that classic modern flare.

Large Abstract

If you looking to create a modern or minimalist style bedroom, a single large framed abstract is a perfect choice. Frame with a simple thin black or white wood frame to compliment the contemporary style.

Gallery Wall

When creating a gallery wall, make sure to hang an odd number of prints as they tend to look the best. Try to stagger the print sizes, with a few smaller prints, a couple medium and maybe one large piece.

Print Set

For a simple classic art look, hang a set of two medium sized framed prints over your bed. For a modern style, hang several photography, line art or shape based abstracts.

Landscape

A great modern spin on traditional bedroom art is an abstract landscape. These neutral artworks are a calm addition to any bedroom.

Art Shelf

If you have a set of framed prints that are odd sizes, use an art shelf to display these prints. Add some smaller decor items such as candles or a small potted plant to the shelf to create a fun modern wall art focal point.

Wall Prints I 3 Tips For Styling Small Art Prints

Shelf

Small artworks can make a wall feel incredibly empty. They tend to draw the eye and seem out of proportion with the space. Instead of hanging a single small art print on the wall, style it on an art shelf.

Accessories

Beside your small art print on your shelf, consider adding some accessories. This could be anything from candle sticks, to books and potted plants. Try to vary the height of these objects so that the shelf looks visually balanced. For example, place one smaller decor piece, and one larger one beside a the artwork. It's best to decorate in uneven numbers, so consider adding three or five small accessories.

Sets/Gallery Wall

If you're set on hanging the small art print, try to hang it in a set or gallery wall. This way the piece is more proportionate to the space.

For a simple and easy gallery wall, go for 3-7 photography pieces. Try to keep it an odd number of framed art prints as those look best grouped together. You can choose nature, architectural or a travel photography for an instagram ready space.

Abstracts

For a modern choice, a gallery wall of abstract prints looks amazing over a couch. These can be colourful for an eye catching feature wall or more neutral if you want to achieve that minimalist or Scandinavian style.

Vintage Eclectic

Grandmillenial is a style that is starting to take over. As millennials inherit their family's furniture and decor, vintage pieces are coming back into vogue. Take some of granny's old prints and mix in some new more classics like matisse or van gogh for a cool eclectic gallery wall.

Monochromatic

For all of you minimalist lovers, a monochromatic wall is a super easy choice. Stick to one colour and create a framed gallery wall from it. For a sleek modern look, a black and white wall is great, but this also works with colour. Blues and sage green are very in, why not create a simple palette to find the prints for your wall?

Wall Prints | 3 Autumnal Art Ideas

You don’t have to use cheesy pumpkin and harvest themed art in your home to bring some fall elements and colour into your space. Instead use warm and muted coloured art and frames.

Warm Abstract

For a modern spin on autumnal art, use abstracts with deep browns, oranges and yellows. These cozy colours will bring fall tones into the room. Use a simple brown or maple frame to complement these pieces. These prints look great hanging above or sitting on a console.

Neutral Landscape

Instead of bright oranges, neutral browns, creams and beiges can be a good choice for this time of year. Landscapes are a great investment since they can be left up through the year but will match your warm toned autumn decor perfectly. These suit living rooms and bedrooms and are great for large empty spaces above couches.

Vintage Print

Vintage art prints give off that classic fall look. They tend to use muted warm colours that make amazing fall decor. These can range from red and orange William Morris prints all the way to muted Matisse prints. Mix and match these prints to create an autumnal gallery wall.
