3 Tips For Grouping Art Prints

When creating a gallery wall or an art shelf, you may be feeling overwhelmed with all of the choices on how to style art prints together. Here are a couple quick tips to make that easier.

Colour

If you're completely lost, colour is a great jumping off point. Create a simple minimalist gallery wall with all neutral prints, or a colourful eclectic wall with pastels. For a sleek modern look, choose black and white abstracts and frame with a thin black wood frame.

Frame

For a simple modern style, match the frame colour and go for a simple black frame. If you want more of a maximalist style, feel free to mix and match the frames, but maybe have a set or two that match.

Location

Depending on where you're styling these framed art prints, the sizing and number of art prints will change. In general, odd numbers of groupings look the best. For example, an art shelf with three to five prints and a gallery wall with 5, 7 or 9. If you're working with a larger space, vary the sizes and mix in some oversized statement pieces.

6 Places to Style Art Sets or Pairs

Console Table

Entryways are the first thing your guests see, why not wow them? Hang a framed set of prints over a console table in a front entryway and instantly impress any family member or friend.

Over A Bed

One of the most common design mistakes is going too small with art. Hang a large set of prints over a bed to make a big impact and visually balance the space.

Hallway

Either hang a large set up, or add a smaller framed art pair to a gallery wall in hallways. This is a great way to add some life to an otherwise boring space in your home.

Living Room

Hang an art shelf over a couch and style a set of framed art prints with small decor pieces such as candle sticks and small plants to create a  beautiful focal point.

Awkward Small Wall

We all have that one weird wall in our homes that's too small to style furniture in front of, but too large to be empty, why not hang a set of prints? Hang two smaller framed art prints vertically to draw the eyes up.

Bench

For an unexpected decor moment, style a set of art prints on a modern bench. Place some books and a small bowl beside them to create a beautiful tableau.

Wall Prints I How High Should I hang My Art?

When hanging framed art prints, you might wonder how high up you should be hanging them? Consider these two things before making any holes in your walls:

Furniture

An easy guideline for hanging art is sticking to around eye level, or about 57-63 inches off the ground. This may vary if your furniture is much taller or shorter and the distance seems odd. If that's the case, hang the framed art print around 4-8 inches above it. One of the most common beginner interior design mistakes is hanging art too far up away from the furniture.

Eye Line

Think about the space in terms of usage. For example, in a living room, you will be sitting more than standing, which can change your eye line. It might be a good idea to hang a piece lower around some furniture so that you're not craning your neck to look at it. Hanging art lower can also provide interesting vignettes in a space.

Wall Prints I 3 Fall Art Ideas

Autumn is all about warm colours. Switching your art seasonally is a great way to decorate if you're not someone that wants fall decorations everywhere. Here are a few great art options for the season:

Abstract

You don't have to just use a bright orange abstract for fall. Look at some of the warm brows, beiges and rust coloured abstracts. Style these framed artworks on a console table or hang as a set in a hallway.

Landscape

Autumn toned landscapes are a great way to bring some warmth into a space. Go larger on these prints and hang oversized above a bed or couch for a cozy fall look. Match the frame colour to the bed frame for a designer style.

Botanical

Switch your bright summer florals and abstracts with a darker more muted print. These pieces look amazing styled on a shelf or added to a framed gallery wall. Frame with a black frame to make the colours pop.

Wall Prints I 3 Ways to Modernize Traditional Art

Frame

Instantly transform any dated or vintage style artwork with a thin modern wood frame. Black or white for a minimalist or contemporary space, or a thin neutral wood frame for a more Scandinavian or bohemian inspired interior. Ditch the mat and your piece is ready to hang, completely transformed.

Location

Interior designers have started placing art in other creative locations around the house. Instead of simply hanging a single large piece over a bed, hang your art in a modern gallery wall, or place on a sleek console table.

Decor

Context is key, placing a more traditional piece in a modern space will make the piece stand out. These pieces really pop on modern white or cream walls. Add some small decor pieces around the space in similar colours such as candles, bowls, vases or throw pillows and blankets, pulling the space together.

Wall Prints I 4 Ways to Mix Art and Textural Elements

Adding art to a shape with natural textures can be tricky. Keep these few tips in mind:

Colour

An easy way to match art to any space is creating a colour pallet. Keep the colours in the interior similar to the art to create a well designed and cohesive space.

Shape

Another simple trick is to use shape based abstracts and mirror decor elements in the space to the art. For example placing a vase, bowl or other small object in a similar shape beside the art.

Frame

Choose a natural wood frame to match a space with lots of organic elements. This will seem much less jarring than a bright white or modern black frame.

Style

Don't be afraid to mix art styles, so long as the colour or frame matches the room. Play around with more traditional and modern art styles in a boho or organic modern interior.

Wall Prints I 6 Modern Bathroom Art Ideas

Abstract Line Art

If you're creating a more minimalist bathroom, a simple line art piece is perfect. This will add some visual interest, but won't be too strong on a white wall.

Pale Photography

Coastal photography is nice for a more transitional bathroom. Add some bath towels in the same colours as the art, to make the space feel cohesive.

Small Landscape

A massive trend at the moment is small framed landscapes on walls, or styled on furniture. These look amazing in the sage green bathrooms. Match the frame colour to other elements in the room for a polished look.

Art Pair/Set

Hang a simple pair of artworks on the wall, or frame a smaller set and place on a shelf above the toilet. Frame with a thin wood frame to stick to that modern art feeling.

Botanical

If your bathroom is a bit more playful, add a framed modern botanical print and hang some plants around it.

Neutral Painting

Organic colours and textures are very in. Hang a larger neutral abstract to stick to that earth toned aesthetic, but add a more contemporary feeling to the bathroom.

Wall Prints I 3 Renter Friendly Art Ideas

Poster Gallery Wall

Instead of making holes in the wall, either use command strips to hang lighter framed art prints, or stick unframed art prints to your wall. Gallery walls look amazing over a bed, couch or across a hallway wall.

Art Shelf

If you only want to make a couple of holes, consider hanging an art shelf. These sturdy shelves are made to hold several pieces of art and a couple of smaller home decor items such as candle sticks, books or small bowls. Stagger the sizes, and add perhaps layer three or five pieces of art on the shelf (try to work in odd numbers as they look best).

Floor Gallery

If your landlord is a little more strict, creating a floor gallery is a fun design opportunity. Place different sized art prints on the floor, or a small bench/box to create some height variation. These galleries look amazing in subtle neutrals for a more Scandinavian look, or with bold colours to create a focal point in your space.

Wall Prints I 5 Trending Art Colour Palettes For Interior Design

Sage

This colour is everywhere at the moment. If you want a pop of colour, but want to keep a more muted colour palette in your space, sage is a great choice. These artworks look amazing on light cream walls with thin natural wood frames.

Black and Cream

Contemporary abstracts in black and cream have really been trending. Dramatic ink brush strokes on cream or pale neutral backgrounds stand out in gallery walls and framed art pairs or sets.

Pastels

Bright colourful prints are making a comeback, especially in the danish pastel aesthetic. These art prints come in a variety of styles from modern still lives to framed Matisse prints.

Blue

Always a classic, blue is a great option for bedrooms or bathrooms. Blue artworks are great to bring out other small decor elements in a space such as pillows, vases or throw blankets.

Neutrals

The Scandinavian and minimalist styles are still in, and neutral art suits them perfectly. These elegant framed abstracts prints feature shape and texture based abstracts and line art leaning into the simplicity of the decor style.

Wall Prints I 5 Art Ideas for Over the Bed

Large Abstract

If you looking to create a modern or minimalist style bedroom, a single large framed abstract is a perfect choice. Frame with a simple thin black or white wood frame to compliment the contemporary style.

Gallery Wall

When creating a gallery wall, make sure to hang an odd number of prints as they tend to look the best. Try to stagger the print sizes, with a few smaller prints, a couple medium and maybe one large piece.

Print Set

For a simple classic art look, hang a set of two medium sized framed prints over your bed. For a modern style, hang several photography, line art or shape based abstracts.

Landscape

A great modern spin on traditional bedroom art is an abstract landscape. These neutral artworks are a calm addition to any bedroom.

Art Shelf

If you have a set of framed prints that are odd sizes, use an art shelf to display these prints. Add some smaller decor items such as candles or a small potted plant to the shelf to create a fun modern wall art focal point.
