Art in Small Apartments

It’s another week and reader, if you're still here (or new here) welcome. This week I wanted to take some time to talk about decorating with art in smaller spaces. We can’t all be blessed with enormous gallery walls, some of us have smaller rented spaces.
Having been a renter myself for years, I hope I can offer you a few tips for decorating a small apartment. First things first, are you allowed to make holes in the wall? This may seem obvious, but some landlords are pretty strict about this. If your landlord is Satan incarnate and won’t allow you to hang art, you have several options. You can either use blue tack and stick up some prints and posters, or you can put your framed art on shelves or the floor. It’s become a pretty trendy option for people to have large prints on the floor, almost like a seated gallery wall.
Next reader, since you have limited space, you’re going to need to be selective about your art choices. I recommend keeping the personal pieces, such as family photos and mementos together. You can either group these together on the wall, or maybe have a few on a shelf or table. For the rest of your space, try to keep a cohesive style or colour palette so that the space seems more put together.
Lastly, friend, if you’re on a tighter budget or you’re a little more minimalistic, it’s better to just have one statement piece. Forget to gallery walls and stick to having one larger piece for a wall. This has the added bonus of taking up less space when moving. You don’t need huge quantities of artwork to elevate your space, try to find one piece that stands out.

How to Make Bold Artwork Not Clash

If you find yourself not sure how to make a bolder art print work in your space, here are a few tips:

Frame

A great start is to matching the frame to the space. If your space is modern, stick to a thin black wood frame. If your space is Scandinavian or transitional, go for a more neutral natural wood frame for your art print.

Decor

Style the artwork in a space that makes sense. For example, if it's a colourful abstract, it makes more sense to style it in a modern or minimalist interior. If it's a funky botanical, maybe place it in a more maximalist space. Even if the colours or subject matter of the art print are wild, it will make more space in the context of a similar decor style.

Accessories

Try to style this artwork around accessories in the space that match the colour/subject matter of the art print. For example match some throw pillows, blankets, lamps or chairs to the framed print to create a more harmonious vignette.

3 Tips For Grouping Art Prints

When creating a gallery wall or an art shelf, you may be feeling overwhelmed with all of the choices on how to style art prints together. Here are a couple quick tips to make that easier.

Colour

If you're completely lost, colour is a great jumping off point. Create a simple minimalist gallery wall with all neutral prints, or a colourful eclectic wall with pastels. For a sleek modern look, choose black and white abstracts and frame with a thin black wood frame.

Frame

For a simple modern style, match the frame colour and go for a simple black frame. If you want more of a maximalist style, feel free to mix and match the frames, but maybe have a set or two that match.

Location

Depending on where you're styling these framed art prints, the sizing and number of art prints will change. In general, odd numbers of groupings look the best. For example, an art shelf with three to five prints and a gallery wall with 5, 7 or 9. If you're working with a larger space, vary the sizes and mix in some oversized statement pieces.

Spring Art Trends

We're turning the corner on spring, while you're doing some spring cleaning, why not take a moment to refresh the art in your space?

Abstract Still Life Artworks

Instead of the traditional spring florals, add a vibrant still life to your home. Vases with florals and botanicals are having a moment in the interior design world right now. Choose a white wood frame and style these framed prints on a modern console table.

Colourful Abstracts

Instead of those dark black pieces that were everywhere this winter, let's move onto colourful framed abstracts. Whether you're adding a pastel Matisse art print or a shape abstract to your space, these pieces are a playful addition to any modern interior. Create a fun gallery wall of these framed artworks over your bed or couch this spring!

Lighter Neutrals

If you're space is minimalist or Scandinavian, you might not want too much colour, so lighter neutrals are the perfect choice for this time of year.

3 Neutral Art Trends

Plaster Imitation

Plaster texture art is taking the home decor world by storm. Instead of adding a chunky piece of plaster, why not instead add a beautiful minimalist print? These pieces add a lovely textural touch to any contemporary interior. These art prints are perfect framed in natural wood or white frames.

Abstract Figure

A classic addition to a home, figurative art is always on trend. Neutral line or shape based abstracts look beautiful larger over furniture or smaller as an addition to a modern gallery wall.

Chunky Lines

Line art doesn't have to fade into the background, it can also be a focal point. Thicker line art is making a comeback in pieces such as the bellow artwork. Create the ideal tableau with a framed art print, chair and matching accessories.

4 Tips For Styling Scandinavian Art Prints

Wall Colour

If you're looking to create that calm Scandinavian feeling in a space, white or light earth toned wall paint are a great start. This bright calming space is ideal for the art style, hanging these modern art prints on colourful walls will clash.

Frame

I would opt for either a white or neutral wood frame. These lighter frames let the art shine. Heavy black wood frames will visually weigh the piece down and seem dark against the lighter walls.

Location

When deciding where to place your framed Scandinavian art print, some classic locations are in a gallery wall, on a console table or over a couch if the pieces are larger or in a set.

Accessories

If you're placing the piece on a console table, Scandinavian vases are a great place to start, the off-white or cream style of these pieces suit the art style perfectly. If you're looking for some other ideas, style pampas grass in the jug for added height if the art is hanging, you can also add pops of the colours from the art around the space in pieces like throw blankets and pillows.

Art Trends Winter 2023

Styles

The styles of trending artworks have remained consistent since the fall, with modern classics, botanicals and
textural abstracts leading the way in the design world.

Colours

In the colder seasons, the trending colours tend to be darker and more neutral. This year, rust, sage, black and navy seem to be the most popular in art. These pieces are best styled in modern spaces with pops of those same colours in other elements in your space such as throw blanks, pillows, trinkets, books or other small decor pieces.
